What is ICSI?
ICSI, which stands for intracytoplasmic sperm injection is a precise technique where a single sperm is selected and injected into an oocyte (egg) using a very fine glass needle. The method was initially developed for couples who had too few, or too few normal sperm present to achieve fertilization during IVF.
More recently, the indication for ICSI has expanded to situations when there are a small number of oocytes available, where prior fertilization with IVF has been inadequate or even when there is unexplained infertility and the malepartner has not previously fathered a child.
By using these expanded indications, we decrease our risk of going through an IVF cycle and not having fertilization.
